Ask A Stylist: I’m 47. Can I Wear A Maxi Skirt?

Q: I recently purchased a black maxi skirt, but am undecided on whether I should keep it or not. I am 47 and afraid it may not be age appropriate. What are your thoughts?

A: This is such a great question! I say keep the maxi skirt—you can totally rock this look. Maxis are easy pieces to style, and you chose wisely in going with black. It’s super versatile since you can play around with patterned tops and layers and wear almost any kind of shoe!

For a casual everyday look, try a button-down chambray shirt tucked into your maxi. Wear a belt to add a bit more polish, then slip on flat, strappy sandals. Add subtle sophistication with a few classic accessories. Another great option to is layer the chambray top over a printed tank, and leave it unbuttoned, or throw on a denim jacket.

If you’re going out for an evening with friends, pair your maxi with a silky tank top and wrap (or a blazer in the cooler months). Rich tones and sleek fabrics add sophistication without any effort! Adding a cropped blazer or cardigan is a great way to maintain structure without losing the flowy effect of the maxi.

I would love to hear how you end up styling your maxi this season! XO Jodi

  1. Love the suggestions. You can also pair the maxi with a simple white button down blouse, tie the front ends of the blouse and tuck the ends in and then add a colored skinny belt to add a pop of color. Add a colored chunky necklace and you’ll look effortlessly put together.

  2. I’m 46 and just bought my first maxiskirt and decided it works better for me as a staple dress. I can jazz it up with a funky scarf or cardigan. Flaunt it I say!

  3. Keep it! I have two (a black and a teal stripe.) I have worn them soo much. You will wonder why you ever second guessed not keeping it!

  4. I am 51 and bought my first maxi skirt last summer. Navy and white chevron print. I wore it with a short sleeved bright pink top for a pop of color with thong sandals for a casual look. I got lots of compliments.

  5. Maxi’s work for all ages! That’s the beauty of a maxi dress or skirt…it doesn’t matter if you’re 7 years old or 70 years old; it all works! Tell me when you see a cute little girl wearing a maxi skirt that you don’t think, “oh look how cute”; now tell me when you see grandma wearing that same maxi skirt you don’t think, “i want to be just as stylish as her when i’m older”? :-)

  6. Can petite women in their 40’s wear a maxi??? I love them but at 5″1…. is there a Maxi out there that isn’t ridiculously long??
