Ask A Stylist: Shorts for a Pear-Shaped Figure

Q: I never have much luck with shorts, but it’s hot outside and I need a couple pairs. I am a fairly small person (5’5”, 130 pounds), but am definitely pear-shaped. Every pair of shorts is either too short, too tight, or too long. Do you have any recommendations?

A: Like you, I am always in search of the perfect pair of summer shorts! One of my favorite brands is KUT from the Kloth, and we carry some great boyfriend shorts of theirs that are a good length and have a super-flattering cut. Bermuda shorts are another option, as their length has a slimming, leg-lengthening effect.

Higher-waisted shorts can also work well on pear-shaped women, as they highlight their signature slim waist. Whichever style you choose, go with a solid, darker-colored short and pair them with a printed, lighter, or brighter top to draw the eye upward and balance out the look.

  1. I like the studded blouse and the black shorts. Not much for the distressed look. And of course, I love the leopard flats!

  2. I love them both. I’m also pear shaped. I’m 5’9″ & 150 with most of that weight in my hips. I would definitely wear either of those looks.

  3. I LOVE Kut from the Kloth! The cuts are excellent for women who don’t fit the typical denim mold and who don’t want to be relegated to ‘mom jean’ cuts. I’m wearing a pair of the Catherine Boyfriend shorts and I love them. They are long enough that I can wear them to work, but short enough that I feel (and look) great in them!

  4. This is great! I was JUST looking for shorts today to wear to BlogHer and as a pear shaped gal, but small like your questioner, I am kind of at a loss. LOVE the high waisted, but wish that everything wasn’t so stinkin’ short. I have good legs, but can’t really wear something SO short to a conference with heels.

  5. I like both the white studded blouse. Have also seen it in dark pink, which I would love in a future fix and also the short sleeve red blouse in this fix

  6. I dig the bohemian style. I think it would work well with a cute leather toe ring style or split style sandal and a larger tote bag for any beach accoutrements. This would also work well for sightseeing in most countries.
I would love to get that in my next fix.

Leave love!
