Fun, flirty and feminine—no pattern says spring like florals. This season, the name of the game is big and bold. Think: less “Couch-Cover-Chic” and more “Dancing-on-the-Riviera.” Pair a ladylike skirt with a structured top, statement bag and stacked-heel spring shoes for a look that’s a million miles from being a wallflower.
Warmer winds are inspiring us to change our stripes. When it comes to most patterns, size makes all the difference in making or breaking the vibe you’re going for. While we love a good pinstripe, this season’s pattern is wider, mixed, and faded, creating the ultimate modern boho look. Relax the pant leg and pair with a light, breezy top and natural bag for a style that’s boardwalk, not boardroom.
Plaid is one of the most versatile patterns ever created. If plaid were a person, it could hang out in any crowd. Equally welcome in all looks from grunge to prep, this season, the vibe is classic. Reach for an exaggerated, oversized plaid in a light, airy fabric to embrace the season. Pair it with your favorite dark skinnies and a structured tote for a look that’s both of-the-moment and completely timeless.
When we think of gingham, one word comes to mind: fresh. This crisp pattern is often confused with plaid, but two main factors set it apart. First, gingham checkers are completely symmetrical, no matter how large or small. Second, only one color is woven in to create the pattern. This spring, modernize your gingham with some strappy flats, a neck sash and your favorite denim in a well-loved rinse.
If you’re looking to put some prep in your step this spring, then polka dots are your go-to pattern. The larger the dot, the more vintage the vibe. Since the preppy look is all about tailoring and structure, stick to a small dot on a dark color. Mix some white denim shorts with a classic denim jacket for a look that’s comfy, casual, and super clean.
3 Easy Tips to Pair Prints
As the old saying goes, you can’t ever have too much of a good thing. When it comes to mixing and matching prints and patterns, we couldn’t agree more. Here are a few simple guidelines to master your mixing.

1. Keep your eye on the size
When mixing things up, pick the print you want to focus on and start there. That’s your “hero.” For example, let’s say you’re going with a statement floral dress. This pattern should be the biggest, and all others (i.e. on your jacket or sash) should be smaller in size.
2. Stick to the story
Staying in a singular palette will keep your outfit from looking thrown together. If your hero piece is warm and bright, reach for complementary patterns that are in the same color story.
3. When in doubt, stay neutral
Neutrals are anything but boring, but they are safe. If you’re rocking a mixed print as your hero piece, neutral patterns (like black, white, tan, cream) are an easy addition and will bring your look down to earth.
